    The Paramedic Bridge Certificate advances a Maryland Licensed CRT who attends BCCC to Nationally Registered Paramedic (NRP) certification. Incoming students receive 12 credit hours towards the Paramedic Bridge Certificate and must earn 31 additional credit hours to receive the advanced certificate.

    NRPs provide emergency medical treatment at the scene of an accident or illness and transport sick and injured persons to medical facilities. An NRP also analyzes and takes command of patient care with full responsibility for the patient until relieved by proper medical staff. NRPs work with Fire and EMS employees, but their role does not involve full supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Skills You Will Learn

  • A Nationally Registered Paramedic (NRP) is responsible for tasks such as:

    • Driving an ambulance to medical emergencies and administering prescribed medical treatment at the site of the emergency or in a specially equipped vehicle.                             
    • Transporting sick and injured persons and providing emotional support
    • Conducting or assisting in emergency activities at the scene of an accident, illness or disaster
    • Responds to medical emergencies and administering prescribed medical treatment to sick and injured persons at the site of emergency or in a specially equipped vehicle.
    • Administering oxygen or intravenous therapy, medications, defibrillation procedures, acquiring, interpreting, and transmitting electrocardiograms and artificial resuscitation. Applying splints to broken bones, controlling hemorrhages, treating minor wounds or abrasions or other procedures as required.

Career Pathways

  • Paramedics work at the scene of medical emergencies, major traffic and other accidents, and natural and man-made disasters where there is exposure to hazardous situations and emotionally traumatic events.

    Paramedics find jobs with:

    • Fire and rescue organizations
    • Private ambulance companies
    • Health care agencies

Accreditation

  • The Baltimore City Community College Paramedicine Program is approved as an Emergency Medical Services Education Program by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS).
     
    The Baltimore City Community College Paramedic program has been issued a Letter of Review by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). This letter is NOT a CAAHEP accreditation status, it is a status signifying that a program seeking initial accreditation has demonstrated sufficient compliance with the accreditation Standards through the Letter of Review Self Study Report (LSSR) and other documentation. 
     
    Letter of Review is recognized by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for eligibility to take the NREMT's Paramedic credentialing examination(s). However, it is NOT a guarantee of eventual accreditation.
