SGT 101: Instrumentation
 
SGT 101 is an introduction to basic surgical instrumentation along with specific nomenclature (names) and classification.Concepts of sterilization and disinfection and their effects on wound healing are included. The care, use and handling of instrumentation and suture materials are provided through hands-on application.
 
SGT 103: Introduction to Surgical Technology 

 

This course introduces the student to the fundamentals of aseptic technique and prepares them for functioning in an operating room (OR). The healthcare team, layout of an operating room suite, and OR attire are discussed.Scrubbing, gowning, and gloving are introduced along with the concepts of maintaining a sterile field. Demonstrations and return demonstrations provide opportunities for student participation in the circulating, surgical assistant, and scrub roles. A student’s returned demonstrations are enhanced through repeated timed performances. The principles of anesthesia are also introduced.
 

SGT 104: Basic Surgical Procedures

 

This course will explore specific clinical conditions,signs and symptoms, and surgical intervention from a step by step scrub approach to various surgical procedures.

 

SGT 105: Hospital Clinical I

 

SGT 105 is a summer semester clinical that takes the surgical technology student to theoperating room setting. Students are provided the opportunity to apply the principles of aseptic technique introduced in SGT 103. Students will be assigned to a clinical affiliation eight hours per day, five days per week for atotal of 240 + hours of clinical experience. Competency based clinical skills must be successfully completed and checked off.

 

SGT 205: More Advanced Surgical Procedures

 

SGT 205 is the intermediate level of the Surgical Procedure series of classes within the AAS Degree Program. This class will focus on advanced surgical procedures such as Peripheral Vascular Surgery, Otorhinolaryngologic Surgery, Plastics/Burns/Reconstructive Surgery, and other specialties as deemed necessary by the instructor. In addition to new concepts in surgical intervention, more complicated types of instrumentation are introduced. Students will continue to learn to anticipate surgeon’s needs through the process of association and the identification of applied surgical patterns.

 

SGT 201: Hospital Clinical II

 

SGT 201 is a Fall semester practicum that continues to guide the surgical technology student to the operating room setting. Students are provided the opportunity to apply the knowledge of skills gained though their first clinical experience. Students will be assigned to a clinical affiliation eight hours per day, two days per week for a total of 240 + hours of clinical experience. Competency based clinical skills must be successfully completed and checked off.

 

SGT 210: Hospital Clinical III

 

SGT 210 is a Spring semester practicum that continues to guide the surgical technology student to the operating room setting.  Students continue at previously assigned clinical affiliation eight hours per day, two days per week for a total of 240 + hours of clinical experience. Competency based clinical skills must be successfully completed and checked off.
 

SGT 215: Advanced and Specialized Surgical Procedures

 

SGT 215 is the third level of the Surgical Procedure series of classes within the AAS Degree Program. This class will focus on advanced surgical procedures such as Ophthalmic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery, and other specialties as deemed necessary by the instructor. In addition to new concepts in surgical intervention, additional instrumentation will be introduced. Students will continue to learn to anticipate surgeon’s needs through the process of association and the identification of applied surgical patterns.
